It’s been three AWESOME years since 1975 and Surface first partnered up, and we can’t just contain the party to the old space. We’re going to kick off our next year by welcoming a new art space into our family, and this one is a doozy! Dubbed THE YARDS, this space is destined to be an amazing asset for Rochester!

To make it even more special, we’ve reached out to an INCREDIBLE roster of talented artists to help us make this show even more memorable than our other shows.

The show will be on the third floor above Flour City Bakery, in Rochester’s brand new art space (whose name will be revealed that night), located in the Rochester Public Market, 280 Union St. North, Rochester, NY 14609.

Use the Union St. entrance to the Public Market, and the entrance to the space is immediately to the left of Flour City Bread Company. There are two flights of stairs.

For the fourth year in a row, Bordo Bello is about breathing life into the Denver arts community. Our goal is to expand the audience of AIGA Colorado and open up the design community to incorporate the related artistic fields that help shape our culture. It all began with an idea by then AIGA Colorado Mentorship Director, Matt Bargell of Bargell Design, who named the event as dedication to his wife’s Italian heritage. Since then this wonderful concept has become one of Colorado’s premier artist events that brings together artists nation-wide for a common good.

Bordo Bello’s funds go to AIGA Colorado’s mentorship opportunities. This includes VSA Colorado/Access Gallery, Robert Taylor AIGA Colorado Scholarship fund, as well as the development of new programming (to be rolled out in 2012).

The show will open on Friday, September 2 at 6:00pm, and also include a family-friendly Saturday showing from noon until 6:00pm. Admission is free, and limited edition prints of all posters will be sold for $40 on both days.

We’re proud to announce that our Cause Partner for this show is the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). At Friday’s opening night party, Widmer Brothers Brewing will provide the beer, and proceeds from the sale of ARTCRANK pint glasses will go to support IMBA’s work to build, maintain and protect mountain bike trails. We’ll drink to that!

Dig this: we’re also teaming up with SoBe, Denver artist Mike Graves and screen printing studio by Black Cloud Workshop to stage a Try Everything party on Friday night, with Sobe sampling stations where you can experience all 31 flavors of SoBe, print-it-yourself SoBe t-shirts, and a live, bike-inspired collaborative mural created by the crowd during the show.

Last but not least, we’ll be showing off our brand-new custom Trek District ARTCRANK Edition bike, designed by Denver expat Lifter Baron. You can also see it at Wheat Ridge Cyclery and Turin Bicycles Ltd.

Illiterate presents Jolly B 13, a group exhibition of thirteen well established artists whose works range from contemporary folk and outsider art to highly graphic forms and pop surrealism. Guest curated by artist Jeremy "THINKMULE" Pruitt, this numerically driven assemblage is to him is "a celebration of the diversity of art". The numeric title of the show reflects Pruitt's personal affinity for the symbolic value of digits apparent in his own practice. In this case his attention turned towards the number 13 and the contentious associations it contains. As an object of superstition, it has captivated people of many beliefs for millennia and evoked a range of connotations in mythology depending on the cultural reference.

Jolly B 13 is an exhibition of artists who through their varied associations will playfully contribute additional perspectives to this most polarizing prime number. From uninhibited primitive representation and expressively grotesque subject matter to delicately polished and meticulous renderings of strange fantasies, this eclectic collection begs consideration in its juxtaposition of approaches to object making. Whether a skeptic or a believer, the inherent meaning between this body of work, like that of the number 13, will certainly remain in the eye of the beholder.

Crawlspace is our favorite type of art show, because it features two artists who work in entirely different mediums. It's like you get to walk into two different galleries at once. Jeremy Pruitt will be exhibiting some of his wooden creations, whereas Melanie will be showing off some intricate line drawings. Titled, Crawlspace, Colorado artists, Jeremy Pruitt (THINKMULE™) and Melanie Pruitt (Deadly Daisy) will be showing April 1st through April 29th at The Black Book Gallery. For their first show at Black Book Gallery, Jeremy will be exhibiting a new round of his wooden art creations and Melanie, a fresh set of her elaborate ink drawings.

“Crawlspace” refers to the shallow areas beneath floors, within walls, in an attic or loft that allow greater access. This access is usually only available by crawling through narrow and confining spaces. As the concept relates to the art, Jeremy says “It is the area where people find the need to examine what we have created and work to discover what we have uncovered for them to see. Sometimes simple, sometimes buried. Bringing the darkness to the light.”

The pair often work together on exhibiting artwork, whether it be curating others’ work or showing their own. Both are originally from the Midwest region and in true anthropological style, have been commonly preoccupied with observation and human history from a young time. Personalities are a big emphasis in their artworks.

Using repetitive motion and a fixation on certain line patterns, the result of Melanie’s concentration ends in highly detailed drawings depicting subjects entrenched in their own background. While facial expressions are marked, the narrowing and widening of ink lines is what gives the pieces their distinct character and shading.

THINKMULE™ balances the intricacies of Melanie’s work well with a collection of primitive-style wooden sculptures. Carrying a heavy brut folk influence, previous utility objects are transformed into animated pieces of art. There is a sense of history and character not unlike rummaging through a street sale, antique store or vintage bazaar. Every old (or new) detail seems so cool. THINKMULE™ will be combining ten sculptural pieces with additional large wood cutouts on display for his part of the show.

rk at the station has recently uncovered these amazing advertising posters in non-public areas and that date from c1956 - 1959 when the station's lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. These are in an old lift passageway.

This striking image is for the coach services of the Royal Blue operator - who in those days were the coaching arm of the old Tilling bus companies of Western National and Southern National that by this date were state owned. they ran a network of coaches from London Victoria Coach station to the South West of England. The poster is by the poster artist Daphne Padden.

We will be leaving these intact - and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible - which is why they've probably survived 50 odd years!

Primitive Folk Art Eagle

This wonderful piece of Primitive Folk Art was found at a local estate sale. This piece is an Eagle, hand carved out of wood and decorated in raised polychrome designs, gilded in gold, inlaid glass pieces, painted over in dark yellow, green and a cream colors. It measures 10" tall, 12 3/4" wide at the bottom, 1" deep on the body and 1/4" deep on the wings and tail. The body of the eagle is carved from one piece of wood, and the wings and and tail are crudely carved separate pieces of wood, attached by nails. There is also a piece of wire attached by nails to hang the eagle. The wire hanger was painted gold at one time but most has worn away.. The finish on the back appears to be a dark reddish brown paint, that has become dirty over time. The wing on the left back side, in photo # 7, appears to have been broken at one time and glued back together. This may have been separate pieces of wood that were glued together, came undone and were re glued by someone later. This area still has some weakness to it but I will leave that to the winning bidder to reinforce. Some small pieces of the raised designs may be missing on the front, but I can't tell if that is the case, or if it was made that way. The paint and gilding over time has aged and has a warm patina to it. The photos do not show the true beauty of it. This piece is a wonderful part of our Folk Art history and guaranteed to be authentic, so don't let it get away. Luther's Speed Shop Merch by HOUSE

Here’s a little peek at the artwork done for the Luther’s exhibition in Austin. Trusty red pencils sketch it up, then onto the first pass with ink. Hated to do it, but had to draw the snake-head big and fake that rascal onto the final in Photoshop. Check the completed piece at the bottom and see how many changes you can spot. Deborah Slabeck Baker

This is the first serious art that Baker has made in nearly 25 years. She's been occupied with her family and children . . . and dance had been her creative substitute. In the last year and a half she started making these embroideries and they have just been pouring out of her. They are a synthesis of all her past media and efforts. There are many references: needlework, samplers, hankies, silhouettes, and Folk Art. But they are also very personal, as this kind of work can be. She thinks of them as drawings, or poems/stories. She works directly on the fabric with thread -- no pre drawing or marking of the fabric. And this year. . . one of Baker's images is being used as a holiday card for The Art Institute of Chicago!
