Clint Eastwood-Badass of the Year

We're "becoming more juvenile as a nation," he said. "The guys who won World War II and that whole generation have disappeared, and now we have a bunch of teenage twits."

I agree. And he is a Libertarian. Top shelf in my book.

Modeling the Future-Raymond Loewy

Arguably the most influential industrial designer of the 20th century, French-born Raymond Loewy (1893 - 1986) fashioned or utterly re-imagined a dizzying array of products and brands during a career spanning seven decades. Writer, illustrator, and co-founder of the Web's best blog, BoingBoing, Mark Frauenfelder has been fascinated by Loewy's work for years. In this gallery, Mark celebrates his favorite Loewy projects, and muses on the man's enduring appeal. Pictured: Loewy fine-tunes a model of a Studebaker sedan he designed.

Have at it. Lots of great old movie star picutres.

Yee-Haw Industries

From Yee Haw: Yee-Haw Industries specializes in original art-like products - from letterpress posters promoting special events, music acts and theatre shows to handmade, woodcut, fine art prints.

I have always liked this company but have even grown more impressed with the variety of products and things they are doing now. I started watching them for the art they were doing with posters and country music legends. Now, its all they do to product development to music events.

Design Sponge's Ode to Alphabet

Some great typography sample. I am fond of the alphabet cards. I have wanted to do my own set of cards forever. Maybe now I will do something out of wood. Big and rough. Could be cool.

Record Club

Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren't familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions.

Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF)-panels

Pretty interesting panels off a LDEF. Gives me a bunch of ideas. What do you know science is good for something.

From the nonist: Deployed into space in 1984, it orbited the Earth for five and a half years with nothing expected of it other than to float there, getting battered about by whatever the great black yonder saw fit to throw at it. You see, every inch of its outside surface was covered with Science. 57 separate experiments, mounted in 86 trays, involving the participation of “more than 200 principal investigators from 33 private companies, 21 universities, seven NASA centers, nine Department of Defense laboratories and eight foreign countries.” Its purpose was to study the effects of space on a multitude of materials. Its name is the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) and I am deeply in love with it.

Cheese and Burgers

Cheeseburger. I made a couple of these last night for Mel and me. It was very good. I change the recipe a bit and did my own seasoning for the meat. But it was very good.

National Geographic Animal Mummies

Wrapped in linen and reverently laid to rest, animal mummies hold intriguing clues to life and death in ancient Egypt.

Many of the mummies photographed for this story belong to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The museum's identification number begins with the letters CG.

Found Photo Friday-Daguerreotypes.

Daguerreotypes.
A daguerreotype (original French: daguerréotype) is an early type of photograph, developed by Louis Daguerre, in which the image is exposed directly onto a mirror-polished surface of silver bearing a coating of silver halide particles deposited by iodine vapor. In later developments bromine and chlorine vapors were also used, resulting in shorter exposure times. The daguerreotype is a negative image, but the mirrored surface of the metal plate reflects the image and makes it appear positive when the silvered surface has a dark ground reflected into it. Thus, daguerreotype is a direct photographic process without the capacity for duplication.

Where the Wild Things Art-Show

About The Show
Illiterate's debut exhibit, Where The Wild Things Art, is a themed show originally proposed to Illiterate by artist, Max Kauffman. The theme resonates as both playfully simple and open to subtle complexities, much like Illiterate.

Max, whose name happens to coincide with the protagonist in Maurice Sendak's book Where The Wild Things Are, worked in conjunction with the Illiterate staff to corral 30 ferociously talented artists from throughout Colorado and beyond to participate in this group exploration. With a title as their sole conceptual limitation, the artists were free to explore their own paths towards interpreting this challenge. A number of artists drew inspiration directly from Sendak's book and film, pushing and playing with its underlying dark moral tones and psychological angst.  Other artists traveled well beyond the familiar imagery to create landscapes inhabited by more personal fantasies and creatures from within their own rampant imaginations. Still, some artists completely forwent this particular narrative approach, evaluating the meaning of the words themselves within the title to inform their work.

Where The Wild Things Artists:

THINKMULE, Adam Reker, Alicia Ordal, Allie Pohl, Andi Todaro, Andrew Hoffman, Brittany Gould, Chris Huth, David Sheets, Deadly Daisy, Delton, Gumby, Ian Millard, Karen Watkins, Katherine Rutter, Markham Maes, Matt Doubek, Matt Furie, Max Kauffman, Mike Gallegos, Mike Graves, Milton Milvon Croissant III, Moeh, Rachel Paton, Sander Lindeke, Sandi Callistro,Scot Lefavor,  Whitney Wells, Yancy Crawford and more...

Film Poster Paintings from Ghana

In the 1980s video cassette technology made it possible for “mobile cinema” operators in Ghana to travel from town to town and village to village creating temporary cinemas. The touring film group would create a theatre by hooking up a TV and VCR onto a portable generator and playing the films for the people to see.

In order to promote these showings, artists were hired to paint large posters of the films (usually on used canvas flour sacks). The artists were given the artistic freedom to paint the posters as they desired - often adding elements that weren’t in the actual films, or without even having seen the movies. When the posters were finished they were rolled up and taken on the road (note the heavy damages). The “mobile cinema” began to decline in the mid-nineties due to greater availability of television and video; as a result the painted film posters were substituted for less interesting/artistic posters produced on photocopied paper.

Pretty cool pool of images. Some houses, lights, signage, etc.
