Hidden posters of Notting Hill Gate Tube station, 2010

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36844288@N00/sets/72157624079183751/

rk at the station has recently uncovered these amazing advertising posters in non-public areas and that date from c1956 - 1959 when the station's lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. These are in an old lift passageway.

This striking image is for the coach services of the Royal Blue operator - who in those days were the coaching arm of the old Tilling bus companies of Western National and Southern National that by this date were state owned. they ran a network of coaches from London Victoria Coach station to the South West of England. The poster is by the poster artist Daphne Padden.

We will be leaving these intact - and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible - which is why they've probably survived 50 odd years!

The photos were taken officially - please do credit London Underground in any links.

Primitive Gear

“Large-scale color photographs from 2005 to 2006 reflect the ritual adornment and spirituality of masquerade in Nigeria, Benin and Burkina Faso in West Africa. These portraits of masqueraders build on Galembo's work of the past twenty years photographing the rituals and religious culture in Nigeria, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti, as well as the homegrown custom of Halloween in the United States. Organized by Ian Berry, Malloy Curator of the Tang Museum, in collaboration with the artist.”
